HONG KONG’s Social Movements and the New Diaspora
Symposium with an exhibition, film screenings & panels

Since the 2019 Anti-extradition Law Amendment Movement, more than 10,000 protesters and press have been arrested while the inauguration of National Security Law further infringed on freedom of expression and the independence of law in Hong Kong. The symposium invites the public to talk about Hong Kong today, yesterday and tomorrow and to learn about the perspectives of researchers, artists and NGO workers who left Hong Kong or still live there.

Panel I:
Social Movements in Hong Kong

13:00 h – Film screening: Blue Island (dir. Tze Woon Chan)

The film documents three real-life characters who engaged in the Cultural Revolution, in the 1967 riot and during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Through reconstructing these events, the film dramatizes their scarred memories and experiences by interlinking their stories with four young people who participated in the 2019 Anti-extradition Law Amendment Movement in Hong Kong. The lives of these protagonists overlap as they find themselves in similar predicaments across time.

Hong Kong’s New Diaspora

17:30 h –  Film screening: The Grass is Greener on the Other Side (dir. Crystal Wong)

Following the journey of Hong Kong migrants, the film explores the tension between their identity and role in society. Through intimate observations, the film cuts through the smoke and fire of the 2019 protests to reveal the current state of post-trauma in Hong Kong, and offers a glimpse into its possible futures. What will become of Hongkongers in a foreign land? Can they break free from the past? Where can they truly find home?

In Cantonese and English with Traditional Chinese and English subtitles.

Symposium:  Ausstellung, Film und Podium

In Hong Kong wurden seit 2019, seit den Massenprotesten gegen das Auslieferungsgesetz mehr als 10.000 Demonstranten und Journalist*innen festgenommen, während das chinesische Sicherheitsgesetz die Meinungsfreiheit und Unabhängigkeit der Justiz immer weiter einschränkte. Das Symposium lädt ein über Hong Kong heute, gestern und morgen zu sprechen, und die Sicht von Wissenschaftler*innen, Künstler*innen und NGO*Mitarbeiter*innen, die Hong Kong verlassen haben und die dort noch leben, kennenzulernen.
