The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Building Understanding Through Dialogue

This panel features Palestinians and Israelis who engage in dialogue between the two groups. Together, they will reflect on their involvement in dialogue, emphasizing its impact on promoting social change. The panelists will share their experiences, highlighting how dialogue facilitates the exchange of perspectives and showcases collaborative projects that effectively foster understanding and address divisions. The panelists recently participated in a dialogue group founded and facilitated by Dr Slieman Halabi and the School for Peace in Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam who will shed light on the method used in dialogue sessions. Through their insights, the event aims to illustrate the practical potential of dialogue to mitigate conflict.

Moderation: Julia Ley

Slieman Halabi a Palestinian citizen of Israel based in Munich, is a social psychologist specializing in social identity and its impact on intergroup relations and conflict. Slieman worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Wuppertal. Committed to promoting dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis, he has been working as a facilitator and organizer of Israeli-Palestinian dialogue groups.

Seba Salem Abudaqa originally from Gaza and now based in Munich, brings extensive experience from working across grass-roots NGOs and government sectors globally. Seba focuses on community empowerment through sustainable development programs and has a deep understanding of diverse cultural needs. Seba works with multiple stakeholders to drive impactful and sustainable projects.

Tom Kellner was born in Haifa, grew up in the Western Galilee, studied in Tel Aviv and Be’er Sheva, and lives in Berlin. She is a literary scholar and a cellist, a hard-headed feminist who engages in activism, and also a mom. Both Seba and Tom co-founded Clean Shelter, a non-profit organization fundraising for sanitary needs and shelter solutions in IDP camps in Gaza.

Sapir von Abel was born in Israel and is based in Munich. Sapir works as an educator at the Jewish Museum in Munich and is part of the curatorial team of the Jewish-Muslim initiative “ausARTen”. She believes strongly in the necessity of dialogue and community building and has been involved in an Israeli-Palestinian Dialogue group since October 8th 2023.

 Julia Ley studied Middle Eastern Studies at Oxford University and works as a journalist for Bayerischer Rundfunk and Deutschlandfunk Kultur. She is originally from Berlin and lives in Munich. She is one of the curators of the interreligious art festival AusARTen which emphasizes Jewish-Muslim dialogue and solidarity.
