Burkina Azza bedeutet „Griot von Burkina“ in der Bobo-Sprache. Die fünf Brüder der Gruppe stammen aus der Region Djibasso im Nordwesten Burkinas und leben heute in Ouagadougou. Sie wollen ihre Traditionen und ihre Geschichte weitergeben und gleichzeitig die Einflüsse der modernen afrikanischen Musik aufnehmen. Obwohl sie von Generation zu Generation Balafonisten sind, verwenden sie auch andere Perkussionsinstrumente (Djembé, Bara, Tama, Doum) sowie Saiteninstrumente (Kora, N’Goni). Die Frères Koueta führen die Tradition dieser uralten Musik vom Vater auf den Sohn weiter.

Mehr als nur eine Live-Show:
Burkina Azza sind mit neuer Energie zurück und fügen einigen ihrer Stücke ein Schlagzeug hinzu, um ihrer Musik eine ganz neue Farbe zu verleihen. Sie traten bereits bei großen Festivals (FIMU, Le rêve de l’Aborigene, Sam’Africa, Africajarc), im Rahmen von Solidaritätsinitiativen und in Hunderten von alternativen Veranstaltungsorten, Cafékonzerten und Theatern auf.

Das reichhaltige und abwechslungsreiche Programm steht allen Zuschauern offen und nimmt sie mit auf eine Initiationsreise von den Straßen von Ouagadougou bis in die entlegensten Dörfer Burkina Fasos. Das Publikum ist immer wieder überrascht von der Fülle der für Afrika typischen Klänge, von den handgefertigten Instrumenten und Kostümen, die Augen und Ohren erfreuen. Es ist auch nicht ungewöhnlich, dass Gäste zur Djembe greifen, um die Gruppe zu begleiten, manchmal Schüler des Meisters Adama Koueta, der dieses Instrument von Frankreich bis Australien unterrichtet.

Drei Alben und Kollaborationen von Jazz bis Dub:
Burkina Azza hat drei Alben veröffentlicht, einige sehr traditionell, wie das erste Album Nayerina (2014 / Bolingo Art), einige an der Spitze der Modernität, wie das Album Djarabi Ballany (2018 – Bolingo Art, Adjololo System), dessen zweiter Teil voller Perlen zwischen Jazz, Afrobeat und Dub ist. Das letzte Album Wari Bo (2021 / Social Joy Records) wurde kurz vor dem Covid in England nur im Vinylformat veröffentlicht und hatte den Ehrgeiz, die Gruppe auf den europäischen Kontinent zurückzubringen.
Man beachte den Benkadi-Remix von Marakuja Records oder West Of The World des australischen Jazzers Ashley de Neef, wo sie ihre ganze Farbe und Einzigartigkeit zusammen mit fabelhaften Musikern einbringen (Ashley de Neef – Kompositionen, E-Bass und Kontrabass, Marco Quarantotto – Schlagzeug, Mirko Cisilino – Trompete, Sam Priven – Altsaxophon).

Burkina Azza means ‘Griot of Burkina’ in the Bobo language. The five brothers in the group hail from the Djibasso region in north-west Burkina and are now based in Ouagadougou. They want to share their traditions and history while embracing the influences of modern African music. Although balafonists from generation to generation, they use other percussion instruments (Djembé, Bara, Tama, Doum) as well as string instruments (Kora, N’Goni). Les Frères Koueta carry on the tradition of this ancestral music from father to son.

More than just a live show: Burkina Azza are back with a new energy, adding a drum kit to some of their tracks to give their music a whole new colour. They have performed at leading festivals (FIMU, Le rêve de l’Aborigene, Sam’Africa, Africajarc), as part of solidarity initiatives and in hundreds of alternative venues, café concerts and theatres.
The rich and varied show is open to all audiences, taking spectators on a journey of initiation from the streets of Ouagadougou to the remotest villages of Burkina Faso. Audiences are always extremely surprised by the profusion of sounds specific to Africa, and by the handcrafted instruments and costumes that delight the eyes and ears. It’s not unusual either for guests to take up the djembe to accompany the group, sometimes students of master Adama Koueta who teaches the instrument from France to Australia.

Three albums and collaborations ranging from jazz to dub: Burkina Azza is three albums, some very traditional, like the first album Nayerina (2014 / Bolingo Art), some at the cutting edge of modernity, like the album Djarabi Ballany (2018 – Bolingo Art, Adjololo System), the second part of which is full of gems between Jazz, Afrobeat and Dub.the latest album Wari Bo (2021 / Social Joy Records) was released just before the covid in England only in vinyl format and had the ambition of bringing the group back to the European continent.
